Let Me Be Perfectly Honest With You

There are two ways to become an expert at something. First way is to just be born with a lot of talent and natural skill in a certain area. The second way is to have almost no skill in an area, but have a burning desire to know the truth about it.

That second example would be me as it relates to relationships.

Very Difficult Past

My relationship past has been more difficult than most people I know. I grew up in a household where neither of my parents ever expressed love for each other, in fact it was just the opposite. Both of my parents were hostile toward each other and by the time I was nine years old they were divorced.

Before that there was not only verbal but physical abuse in the household. Needless say, I came into the world without any "positive" examples of relationships, but many negative ones. My early relationship life was quite dysfunctional, as you can imagine.

Breaking The Cycle of Abuse

I lived with a girl when I was 20 years old who was as emotionally wounded as I was. She wanted nothing more than to start having my babies and have me abuse her, as she had seen her parents abusive. I love that girl madly. All of my programming was pushing me to go down that same dreadful road that she and I had both been exposed. Yet, I didn't.

At that time, I was so mixed up that I did not know whether or not I was going to grow up an abuser myself as that had been my example. That relationship taught me that I was not abusive. 

To this day, the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life was end that relationship.
